Promenade on slow street – The installation is taking to the streets!

Overal ter wereld moet de winkelstraat dringend opnieuw worden ontworpen. Het is belangrijk dat we kijken naar hoe we winkelen, repareren, naaien, ruilen, samenwerken, creëren en DIY-en. Vanuit daar moeten we een totaal nieuwe manier ontwikkelen hoe we kleding en accessoires ervaren, hoe we onszelf uitdrukken met wat we dragen, maar ook hoe en waar we toegang hebben tot mode. 

 

Deze interventie is een wandeling naar onze nabije toekomst, waar de winkelstraat draait om relaties en sociale interactie. Speciaal hiervoor is er een nieuw levend sculptuur gecreëerd, een installatie met mobiele ‘promenades’ waarin wij onze toekomstige winkelstraat kunnen visualiseren. Deze installatie legt de ‘slow street’ vast – initiatieven in de stad Arnhem die in kaart zijn gebracht door Bureau Ruimtekoers.

CLARA CHU 

 

Clara Chu is een multidisciplinaire kunstenaar en designer gevestigd in Londen. Ze creëert werk dat alledaagse voorwerpen uit onze huiselijke wereld een nieuwe invulling geeft. Ze vermengt hierbij massaproductie met het handgemaakte. Chu’s visionaire en kleurrijke pop accessoires dagen uit wat we op ons lichaam dragen. Deze accessoires bestaan niet alleen uit textiel, maar ook uit alledaagse huishoudelijke voorwerpen die we als vanzelfsprekend beschouwen zoals groenteschillers en lepels. 

 

In 2019 studeerde Chu af aan het Royal College of Art. Sindsdien is haar werk gepubliceerd in The Face, Lifestyle Asia, Dazed en Vogue Italia. In haar werk stelt ze de focus op snelle consumptiegoederen ter discussie en vervaagt de grenzen tussen ‘hoge’ en ‘lage’ vormen van cultuur door middel van humoristische transformaties. 

 

Voor Promenade on Slow Street heeft Chu een interactieve installatie ontworpen. Deze installatie geeft jou de kans om de manier waarop je wilt omgaan met de winkelstraten en gemeenschapsruimten te redesignen om zo een meer inclusief en regeneratief modesysteem te creëren.

Around the world, the high street is in urgent need of redesign. From how we shop, repair, sew, swap, collaborate, create and customise, we need to build an entirely new experience around clothes and accessories, the ways to express ourselves through what we wear, and how and where we access fashion. 

Decades of mass consumption and cheap goods have had a detrimental effect on our shopping centres, which are in turn becoming increasingly abandoned or monopolised by big brands – an aesthetic hegemony of sameness. 

We need to invent new systems that encourage slower, more creative and individualised consumption, value skills and services that result in reducing our carbon footprint and increase our appreciation. What does your slow street look like? What’s missing out there? How can we take action to redesign our high-street? 

This intervention is a walk into a near future scenario, where the high street is about relationships and social interaction rather than simply commerce and product. We have commissioned a central ‘living sculpture’, an installation in which visitors can visualise and imagine your future high street. 

 

This installation will capture the existing ‘slow street’ initiatives in the city of Arnhem, mapped by Ruimtekoers. Visitors can interact with the living sculpture to leave their ideas and inspirations throughout the biennial. The promenades of the modular section into the street will encourage further interaction. 

Clara Chu is a London based multidisciplinary artist and designer. She creates work that re-imagines everyday, mundane objects in our domestic world, mixing mass production with the hand crafted. Visionary and colourful pop accessories challenge what we wear on our bodies, not only textiles but everyday household objects we take for granted such as vegetable peelers and spoons. Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2019, her work has been featured in publications including The Face, Lifestyle Asia, Dazed and Vogue Italia. Much of it questions the prominence of fast-moving consumer goods, blurring boundaries between ‘high’ and ‘low’ forms of culture through humorous transformations. 

 

For Promenade on Slow Street, Clara has designed an interactive installation to give participants the opportunity to engage in redesigning the way they would like to interact with their shopping streets and community spaces to allow for a more inclusive and regenerative fashion system.
